We have a requirement for a Front End JavaScript developer with basic-to-good CSS and HTML.

This is a role for a programmer, not a designer, so no one is going to be pestering you for a portfolio or a client list.  Similarly - this is a role for a programmer, not a designer, which means you will be writing JavaScript.  Lots and lots of JavaScript.  You will be taking pencil sketches, Adobe wireframes and completed graphics, and making user interfaces, using all the skills that you know and love.

*WE ARE A REACT SHOP*. This doesn't mean that you have to be a Special Forces Level ReactJS ninja right now, but it does mean that if you want to work in Your Favourite Framework, and that people will bend over backwards to accommodate you, there are other places that you should be looking.  Whilst the position is not explicitly an Entry-Level one, you will be working alongside our resident Front End Evil Genius, and you'll be much happier if you are able to take extensive advice and guidance about the way things are done.  If you have a pervasive need to tear up the rulebook and do everything Your Way, you'll find lots of other jobs that will suit you better.

We'd love to be able to tell you that the job represents the absolute cutting edge of everything, but the bread-and-butter will be making beautiful front ends for existing back ends.  If you can bring some NodeJS to the table, that's great too, but the thing you won't be able to do without is the ability to make an AJAX call to a backend and deal with the data that comes back.  Bonus point for being able to work with 3rd party OAuth.  If you are able to perform day-to-day tasks that are absolutely needed, you find that there is plenty of scope and opportunity for stretching your wings and bringing your own Great Ideas to the table.

We think that this role is most likely to appeal to those having recently completed full-time education, or software engineers from other disciplines who have recently transitioned to front-end work.  Enthusiastic amateurs and self-studyers are by no means excluded.  You'll need to have enthusiastic communication skills and be happy writing a short document or speaking in front of a small group.  Even if English is not your first language, this shouldn't stop you from applying, although we can't sponsor working visas.  The job is largely on-site, in Central Birmingham, and we are not offering fully remote work or relocation fees.
